Quotes for my amusement:
"There's a reason armies wear uniforms even though they make them easier to spot. Sometimes that's what you want. Uniforms suggest organization, power, and numbers. These in turn inspire fear. And as any good operative knows there's no more effective weapon than fear."
"...and there's no better disguise than fear."
"Business 101. Fear is a great motivator."

Quotes
"The redhead looked like he'd turned delinquent as a teenager and never grew out of it, like those kids in the Sector Eight warehouses who I still hated and admired in equal measure. This guy was looking down at me with the same kind of smirk at the corners of his mouth."
"They were the Turks from the Shinra Company. The ones parents warned their kids about: You'd better behave or the Turks will come for you."
"They knew their name had an effect on civilians, and they used it to their advantage. When Shinra's shadowy secret force arrived on the scene, it meant that whatever the problem was, the solution was likely going to involve violence."
"'Brutality is all in a day's work for Turks,' Leslie said decisively. 'She found out why Fabio stole the medicine, and she felt sorry for Bits. But the punishment was still due. You should be glad she wasn't the one to visit you yesterday.'" [on Elena]
"...and when I got myself together, I realized what a stupid thing I'd done. I asked for help from the last people anyone would want help from. They can smile real sweet and act nice, but they're not normal. You can see what they've done in their eyes. They have blood on their hands."
"'Why even bother with this?' Rufus said.
'Well...if nothing else, Reno will stop bringing it up.'
'...That's good enough for me,' he replied, spinning his wheelchair around to face the door."
"Then [Reno] broke into a grin as he introduced Rufus. 'Hey, Evan. Meet the president of Shinra.'
Evan's eyes were nearly popping out of their sockets. Clearly, no one had told him anything. Maybe, Rufus thought, it was worth going along with his subordinates' schemes every now and then.
'The president?' Evan looked at Reno. 'You mean--Rufus Shinra?'
'That's right. You can call me Doofus Shinra if you like.' Rufus fielded the question himself.
'He's alive...' Evan was still speaking to Reno.
'I am. The decoy who took my place is not,' Rufus replied. 'You're a candidate for the position--and from what I can see, you'll do.'
Evan's jaw dropped, and he stared agape at Reno, then Rufus, then Tseng.
Tseng looked down at the ground, trying to hide his laughter."
"He looked like a Turk, too. The very definition of one, in fact. Reno and Rude both showed an awkward humanity--well, sporadically in the latter's case--but this guy was pure ice." [on Tseng]
"You must feel like your world's been turned upside down. Understandable, Rufus thought. But now is the time to calm down and think. What do you want?
'C'mon, you're meeting a long-lost brother! Both of you could act a little happier,' Reno blurted with excessive enthusiasm.
Evan shot him a glare and squared his shoulders before Rufus. 'What do you want?' he said, as if it took all his courage to ask.
We really are brothers. Rufus tried to hold it in, but eventually, he had to give in to the laughter.
'What's so funny?'
'It's strange, the power of blood,' Rufus said with an effort, then cracked again. It had been quite a while since he laughed out loud. He knew Reno and Tseng were looking at him, and their bewilderment only made the whole mess more comical."
"'If you want your president alive'--then what?--'then you better back away from the car!'
'Ugh, seriously?' Shaking his head, Reno walked toward the bottom of the stairs.
'You, too, Rude! Leave them alone!' I said. Reno was climbing the stairs now and getting closer. 'Reno, stay back!'
Reno obediently halted. I had expected to see fury in his eyes, but all I saw was sorrow. Surprisingly, I felt a pang in my chest, too. But there was no other way. I pulled Kyrie's knife from my pocket and opened it--a sad, flimsy little blade, but it could still slice open a throat.
'Hey, don't be stupid.'
I ignored Reno and held the knife to Rufus Shinra's neck."
"'Reno, take Rude and check on the lab.' Suddenly, Rufus was giving orders. 'Tell Tseng not to get involved here.'
'Wait, what? Boss, are you sure?!'
'Don't worry. I'm as interested in staying alive as you are.'
Reno reluctantly descended the stairs, glancing over his shoulder almost every step."
"'There's a gun in the pocket of my robe. Take it.'
Startled, I looked at Rufus, his hands lightly folded in his lap, in easy reach of his pocket; he could have killed me anytime he wanted. Kyrie realized it, too. She wasted no time grabbing the gun."
"I wheeled Rufus back into the lodge, then folded the knife and set it in his lap. 'It's a trade.'
"After Evan and Kyrie left, Rufus fiddled with the penknife. It was more of a whittling tool than a weapon, small enough for a child to use. The first knife he'd ever held had been a prototype model for the Shinra military. The blade must have been ten or twelve inches.
In another life, he might have had the same lot as Evan or Kyrie. He tried to picture it, but as he'd suspected it would, his imagination failed him."
"'Anyway, you've got trouble, too. The redhead left a message for you.'
A message from Reno? I braced myself.
'Verbatim: "You played us, and you're gonna pay."'
'...Oh.'
You're gonna pay? That sounded just like a punk threat."
"Reno did not sound amused. 'After we went to all that trouble to take him to his brother. Not that the boss was any more grateful.'
Rude figured that from Evan's perspective, and even from Rufus Shinra's, Reno's nosiness had brought only trouble.
'If I found out about a brother I'd never seen, I'd make way more of an effort than those two,' Reno insisted.
'That right?' Rude said. My colleagues are all I need.
'You're not much into family, eh, Rude?'
'I'm a Turk,' Rude said flatly. 'Coolheaded and cold-blooded.'
He turned and headed for the truck.
'Hey, Rude. You pissed at me?' Reno called, an unabashed whine. 'C'mon, man. You can't cold-zone me now. Tseng and Elena aren't answering my calls, and the boss just tells me to finish the monument. I know they're starting something awesome without us. We're outcasts! Me and you, you and me. If we don't stick together, then what?'
Rude looked back. 'Tseng isn't answering calls?'"
